What is SCADA and what do all the terms mean?

Check out the Wiki site to help navigate the maze of terms and concepts…

“SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) is a system operating with coded signals over communication channels so as to provide control of remote equipment (using typically one communication channel per remote station). The control system may be combined with a data acquisition system by adding the use of coded signals over communication channels to acquire information about the status of the remote equipment for display or for recording functions. It is a type of industrial control system (ICS). Industrial control systems are computer-based systems that monitor and control industrial processes that exist in the physical world. SCADA systems historically distinguish ICS systems by being large-scale processethemselves from other s that can include multiple sites, and large distances.”

M2M communications, the enabling technology.

Read about the history to get some insight on the future…

“Machine to Machine (M2M) refers to technologies that allow both wireless and wired systems to communicate with other devices of the same type. M2M is a broad term as it does not pinpoint specific wireless or wired networking, information and communications technology. This broad term is particularly used by business executives. M2M is considered an integral part of the Internet of Things (IoT) and brings several benefits to industry and business in general as it has a wide range of applications such as industrial automation, logistics, Smart Grid, Smart Cities, health, defense etc. mostly for monitoring but also for control purposes.”

How Verizon Does It

How is cellular secured for M2M communications?

Read about an article from Verizon in regards to cellular security…

Managed Certificate Services platform is designed to authenticate objects and machines and secure data transmitted between these connections.

The number of Internet-connected devices, such as vehicles, smart meters and home monitoring systems, is predicted to reach in the billions by the year 2020. As a result, Verizon is launching a new easy-to-use enterprise portal for its Managed Certificate Services platform that offers digital certificate creation and management capabilities for large-scale IoT deployments in the tens of millions.”

What is the difference between HMI and SCADA?

Learn the lingo.  Automation engineers explain the difference between Scada and HMI….

HMI stands for Human Machine Interface, It is basically a portable display device in which the status of the PLC and Process can be graphically visualized. The operator can also give commands to the PLC and view the process output in a HMI.

SCADA (Supervisory control and data acquisition) does the same thing what is mentioned above but it is a remote monitoring system where as HMI is local to machine.”

Cloud-based SCADA offers alternatives to traditional systems

Read an article from Waterworld about the alternatives to using a cloud-based SCADA system….

“Many small and rural water and wastewater facilities face budget constraints and cuts that make it difficult to afford the initial investment in a SCADA system that will help them run their operations more efficiently. Smaller facilities also can’t afford to have a dedicated technical staff to manage their SCADA systems.

This makes cloud-based SCADA a very attractive alternative for the water and wastewater industry. It can help utilities limit the need for hardware and software purchases, installation and maintenance. A cloud-based service shifts the task of housing, maintaining and displaying data from the municipality to the service provider...”
