It is a type of industrial control system (ICS). Industrial control systems are computer-based systems that monitor and control industrial processes that exist in the physical world. HMI stands for Human Machine Interface, It is basically a portable display device in which the status of the PLC and Process can be graphically visualized. The operator can also give commands to the PLC and view the process output in a HMI.

SCADA (Supervisory control and data acquisition) does the same thing what is mentioned above but it is a remote monitoring system where as HMI is local to machine.”
